#PINKSHIRTPROMISE

Feb 24 is Pink Shirt Day, a day everyone is invited to wear a pink shirt and show support to help end bullying in our communities. It has become a symbol in many communities to endorse the anti-bullying movement as it affects children and adults alike, in schools, workplaces and on social media.

Ivanhoe Cambridge, partnered with Shaw and Post-It, has launched a national campaign to take a stance against bullying and I had the opportunity to help get the message out to shoppers at Guildford Town Centre. Come out and share your #PinkShirtPromise on the Post-it Pink Wall at the Centre Court display and they will make a $1.00 donation to the Surrey Fire Fighters’ Charitable Society for each promise made between Feb 17-24.

For those who don’t know the amazing story behind Pink Shirt Day…..The international movement started with a grade 9 student in Nova Scotia who was bullied for wearing a pink polo shirt to school. Two grade 12 students went out and bought 50 pink t-shirts and campaigned to get other students to wear them to school, hoping to create a sea of pink. Well, a “tsunami of support” happened and hundreds of students showed up wearing pink that day.  With so much negative media dominating the internet, it is refreshing to hear stories that inspire kindness.

Pink Shirt Day is a chance for people, especially youth, to show their support and take a stance against bullying and is now recognized in over 25 countries world wide.
